First Deputy of Russia’s Representative at the United Nations . Alexander Bankin reiterated that imposing new sanctions on Syria is a red line for Russia, pointing out that it is impossible to continue the settlement process and the work of the UN observers mission in Syria amidst sanctions imposed on one side only within Syria. Bankin added that Moscow was ready to accept an intermediary solution vis a vis the UN’s draft resolution on extending the mission of the observers in Syria.
Bankin considered calls by some figures of the opposition to exempt Kofi Anan from his duty as the UN envoy to Syria as inappropriate , pointing out that the opposition itself was involved in perpetrating acts of violence, and reminding that the opposition’s goal set in its latest meeting held in Cairo was to topple the Syrian regime by force. That is why, he added, this opposition wished to foil Annan’s attempts to reach a peaceful solution for the crisis.
