The 9th round of the Syrian-Russian Joint Commission for Economic, Trade, Scientific and Technical Cooperation was concluded in Sochi, Russia. Mr. Ismail Ismail, the Minister of Finance, headed the Syrian delegation whereas Vice Premier Mr. Dmitry Rogozin headed the Russian delegation.
In the opening session, Mr. Rogozin said that Russia supported the Syrian people’s right in defending own territory and that supported their choice during the last presidential elections. He praised the success of the elections in spite of the difficulties and efforts to hinder that initiative. Mr. Rogozin stressed that Russia, led by President Putin, will continue to support Syria economically and politically.
The Syrian Finance Minister, Mr. Ismail expressed Syrian people and leadership’s gratitude to the Russian friendly people. He viewed this session as an opportunity to strengthen ties between the two friends in face of US and Western hegemony.
After discussions, the final protocol of the 9th round of the Syrian-Russian Joint Commission for Economic, Trade, Scientific and Technical Cooperation was signed by the heads of the two delegations. In addition, a cooperation agreement in customs and an MoU between the Syrian Ministry of External Trade and the Russian Ministry of Economic Development were also signed. After the signature Mr. Rogozin said that said that Syria has chosen the Euro-Asian integration as a political doctrine. He concluded that the meeting was important in intensifying communication between the two countries that are facing Western sanctions.
Mr. Samer Othman, Vice Chairman of the Russian-Syrian Businessmen Council, said that the outcome of this meeting was impressive especially in term of creating the “Green Pathway” where goods will be directly traded from Latakia port in Syria and Novorossiysk port in Russia. He promised that the first shipment of Syrian vegetables ill arrive in a few weeks. This will be followed by regular shipments every 10 days
