Putin and Rompuy: Need for Political Solution in Syria

Russian President, Vladimir Putin said that Moscow has differences with the EU over the situation in Syria and seeks to reach understanding about them through continuous deliberations and dialogue.
President Putin was speaking in a press conference following the Russia-EU Summit held in Brussels.
Putin affirmed that Russia's stance on what is taking place in Syria is clear in terms of stressing the necessity to reach a sustainable solution through having all the Syrians agree on their country's future and securing their interests, adding ''We have reached a statement in Geneva that includes these points to which our Western partners have agreed, and we also agreed on the necessity that all parties come to dialogue for Geneva statement not to remain ink on paper''.
''I'd like to stress that we want a democratic order established in Syria that reflects the Syrians' will, '' President Putin said, noting that Syria is close to the border of Russia which does not want it to suffer from chaos.
Rompuy: We Have to Continue Efforts to Reach a Political Solution in Syria
For his part, President of the European Council, Herman Van Rompuy, highlighted the necessity to continue efforts to reach a political solution to the crisis in Syria and to support the mission of the UN Envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi.
''We exchanged views on the situation in Syria and agreed on the necessity of halting violence and backing Mr. Brahimi's efforts, and I renewed the EU stance announced recently that we are working to provide support for protecting civilians and backing a future democratic state in Syria,'' Rompuy said.
The Russia-EU Summit discussed a variety of issues including energy, trade, foreign relations and visa facilitation.
Russia Foreign Ministry: Lavrov Stressed to Brahimi the Need for Abidance by Geneva Declaration
Russia on Friday reiterated its call upon the Syrian parties and external players to abide by the Geneva Declaration for resolving the crisis in Syria.
The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement on its website following a phone call between Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov, and the UN Envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, saying Lavrov focused in its work with the Syrian parties on the need for applying the items of the final declaration of the ministerial meeting held in Geneva on the 30th of last June.
The Ministry's statement added that Lavrov stressed that the Geneva Declaration is "irreplaceable to allow finding an exit from the stumbling situation and halting the violence and the use of force and starting a Syrian national dialogue on the reforms in the country that serve the interest of all the Syrians."
"Lavrov also noted that it is necessary not only for the Syrian parties but also for the main external players to abide by the agreements that resulted from the aforementioned meeting," said the statement.
It pointed out that Brahimi stressed to Lavrov his readiness to continue communication with the Russian side on the crisis in Syria.
Lavrov: Western Countries Supply Gunmen in Syria with Money & Arms then Hold Authorities Responsible If Chemical Weapons Fall in Their Hands
In another context, Lavrov expressed surprise at the logic of the Western countries in dealing with the crisis in Syria, saying that "They supply gunmen with money and arms, then they hold the authorities responsible if chemical weapons fall in the hands of the gunmen."
Lavrov said in an exclusive interview with Russia Today TV channel on Thursday that Damascus has given assurances that it will not use chemical weapons under any circumstances.
He added that "I don't think that Syria will resort to use chemical weapons," indicating that "it is not the first time that we hear rumors of which we make sure of them many times before we sought clarity from the Syrian government which, in turn, strongly affirms that this will not happen whatever the circumstances are."
Lavrov said "Our western friends said that the whole responsibility lies with the Syrian government if these weapons fell in the hands of the gunmen. It is weird that such thing came out from those who encourage gunmen to reject dialogue and continue fighting and provide them with arms, money and political and moral support."
Zafgharody: Western Powers behind Events in Syria
Former Director of Russian Cultural Center in Damascus Dimitry Zafgharody said that Western powers are behind the tragedy unfolding in Syria.
In an interview with SANA correspondent in Moscow on Friday, Zafgharody said that no internal factors would have matched the level of violence practiced by the armed terrorist groups, especially that the Syrian people gave lessons in humanity to the whole world.
He added that the plan that the US and Western states are trying to apply in Syria is part of Pentagon's package of procedures adopted fifteen years ago, called ''Fourth Generation Warfare'', including revolutions that employ members trained abroad or opposition groups inside the country, indicating that this type has failed in Syria.
''So they moved to plan B ..One that depend on sending terrorists, predominantly members who are well-trained in terrorism tactics coming from such countries as Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Afghanistan, Chechnya and Turkey, with no roots in Syria whatsoever.''
He added that this kind of war necessities that combatants use excessive force and violence without setting the assumption to power as their mission, ''for they are mercenaries who are incapable of ruling a country.''
Zafgharody added that countries which serve as pawns in the hands of the US, such as Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, were concerned because of security and stability in Syria and the economic projects that would have stripped these countries of revenues were they to be accomplished.
''I believe that the Syrian people will have the final say about the future of their country,'' Zafgharody said. ''The current events that have upset peace over two years in Syria came as a surprise. No one would have anticipated them, for the culture and heritage of the Syrian people suggested no such state of affairs.''
Deputy Chairman of the Russian Committee for Solidarity with Syria, Oleg Fomin said that the Syrian people are valiantly confronting the Western world and schemes of Arab countries which accepted to become puppets in the hands of the US and Europe.
''Syria is fighting for preserving its territorial integrity and independence…It is repelling a threat that is targeting its existence as a state,'' Fomin added.
He described the Turkish position as 'loathsome', indicating that Turkey was supposed to be a peace-making mediator, adding that ''Turkey has forfeited a precious opportunity to be a leading power in the region.'' H. Said/M. Ismael
