Director Khaldoun al-Maleh passes away
Syrian director, producer, and media figure Khaldoun al-Maleh passed away on Monday evening in the United States after struggling with a terminal illness. He was 78.

A statement issued by the Syrian Artists Guild offered condolences on behalf of all the workers in the arts and media field to al-Maleh’s family, saying that his passing is a great loss as he had worked throughout his career to elevate Syrian art.

The statement said that al-Maleh was a role model among artists, directors, and producers with a unique presence and a remarkable skill in presenting characters.

Head of the Syrian Artists Guild Zuhair Ramadan told SANA that the late director was a pioneer in the art of drama in Syria since its beginnings in the 1950s, in addition to being one of the founders of the Guild and one of the first to market Syrian productions in the Arab world.

Ramadan noted that al-Maleh worked in the Syrian TV since its establishment, first as a TV anchor and then as a director.

Khaldoun al-Maleh was born in Damascus in 1938. He was one of the first Syrian directors, directing many classic TV shows, specifically shows featuring actors Duraid Lahham and the late Nihad Qale’i and their characters Ghawwar and Hosni, two very popular comedy characters that are ingrained in the minds and hearts of generations of Syrians and Arabs.

He also director a feature film based on one of those shows and TV productions of several plays for actor Duraid Lahham and writer Mohammad al-Maghout. His last work was the TV show al-Jammal (The Camel) in 1999.
