Damascus - The Women Empowerment Project continues activities in Afrin town and Mount Simeon, northwest of Aleppo, targeting 7 villages. The project is sponsored by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labour in cooperation with the UNDP and Fardos Project of the Syria Trust for Development. National Director of the Project Wisam al-Ahmad said the project's essential role is educating women, increasing their health awareness and training them on how they can establish their own businesses in cooperation with the Commission for Employment and Projects Development. Al-Ahmad added the role of FARDOS Project as a partner in the project lies in helping women in achieving the sustainability condition through developing the financed projects, as the bulk of the loan offered to women has reached about SYP 20-25 thousands. She pointed out that no specific projects are imposed on women to benefit from the financing, but they have full freedom to choose their projects based on the experiences and skills they have, noting that the majority of them tend to the commercial and service projects like grocery, clothes markets and breeding animals' projects. The project's capital is estimated at USD 9 million financed by of the Syrian Government, the UNDP, and Qatari Silatech Establishment. Women Empowerment Project was established in 2007 based on an agreement signed between the Minister of Social Affairs and Labour and the International Planning and Cooperation Commission and the UNDP to set mechanisms to help eliminate poverty by developing the human capital through the empowerment of women in the poorest areas in Syria.
