CEO of Saudi Telecom Company Saud al-Duwaish disclosed that his company had received a letter stating that the auction for the 3rd mobile network operating license has been postponed without specifying another date. “Syria is a good and attractive market and we are determined to enter the market despite current circumstances,” said al-Duwaish. He pointed out that they have been informed today that the Syrian government has postponed the date of the auction which was due to be held on April 27. Syrian sources, however, announced today the postponement of the tender and that the new date would be set next week. Turkcell and France Telecom had withdrawn from the auction, whereas Saudi Telecom Company and Qtel remained. It is to be noted that the license tender stipulates that the winning bidder should give 25 percent of its annual mobile revenue to the government, whereas the state telecoms company (STE) will hold a 20 percent stake in the new mobile operator.
