General Assef Shawkat (1950 - July 18, 2012) was the deputy Minister of Defense in Syria since September 2011. He previously served as the army's deputy chief of staff from July 2009 to September 2011.
He then became deputy Minister of Defense.
He was assassinated in a suicide attack on a ministerial meeting in Damascus, today, 18 July, 2012.
