Syria becomes member of International Federation of Journalists
The Executive Committee of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) accepted the membership request of the Syrian Journalists Union during a meeting held in Tunisia on Friday.

In a statement to SANA, Chairman of the Syrian Journalists Union Moussa Abdelnour said that granting Syrian membership in the IFJ blocked the attempts by some news groups operating outside Syria to join the Federation under Syria’s name, adding that the Union, with support from the Federation of Arab Journalists, was embroiled in a real battle against those who tried to claim to be speaking on behalf of the Syrian journalists.

Abdelnour said that this decision validates the work of establishments, unions, and federations in Syria and proves that it the Syrian state managed to preserve its institutions despite the terrorist war imposed on it.

The Brussels-based IFJ is the largest global union federation for journalists’ unions, and it aims to protect and strengthen the rights and freedoms of journalists, representing more than 600,000 journalists in over 120 countries.
