President Putin: Need for preserving Syria sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity
President Vladimir Putin of Russia discussed with US counterpart Donald Trump, in a telephone call, the latest developments on the crisis in Syria and the outcomes of the meeting held with President Bashar al-Assad in Sochi.

“Talks during the telephone call dealt with the pressing issues in Syria, taking into consideration the military operation which approaches its end concerning the elimination of terrorists in the country,” the Kremlin said in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement added that President Putin has affirmed readiness to actively contribute to a long-term political settlement in Syria according to UN Security Council resolution 2254 and in line with the agreements reached in Astana, as well as the joint statement approved by Presidents of Russia and the US on November 11th during the economic cooperation summit in Vietnam.

“Putin and Trump stressed the importance of preserving Syria sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity as well as reaching a political settlement based on the principles that should be put within an inter-Syrian negotiating process with most possible broader image,” the Kremlin said.

It added that Putin briefed Trump on the main outcomes of his meeting with President al-Assad during which he underlined commitment to the political process in Syria.

In a relevant context, the Kremlin said that Putin discussed with head of the Saudi regime, Salman bin Abdul-Aziz, bilateral cooperation and the situation in the Middle East.

“President Putin briefed Salman on the outcomes of his meeting with President al-Assad and on main issues set on the agenda of Astana guarantor countries summit meeting- Russia, Iran and Turkey- due on Wednesday in Sochi,” the Kremlin affirmed.
