Minister of Economy and Trade Dr. Mohammad Nidal al-Shaar said that the decision to suspend importing materials with +5% customs is temporarily and precautionary and could be adjusted.
In statements made late Monday, al-Shaar said the decision aims at preserving Syria's reserves of foreign currencies and using the reserves in meeting the citizens' basic needs for as long time as possible.
"If we saw that the setbacks are more than its positives, we'll make an appropriate decision. The Ministry takes its decisions on the basis of the citizens' interests." Al-Shaar indicated.
He pointed out that the list of materials exempted from the decision, which includes 51 materials, is not final and could be adjusted according to the national needs.
He stressed that sometimes prices rise because of international causes and that is normal, but some figures try to raise prices just to get more profit.
He concluded saying that this decision was taken because of the current crisis, adding that "In every decision, there will be beneficiaries and sides which are harmed by it… The standard is to increase positives and limit setbacks".
Earlier, the cabinet decided to halt, temporarily, importing some materials which their customs exceed 5%, except for the basic goods needed by the Syrian citizens.
