Lavrov: EU Reducing Weapons Embargo on Syria to Arm Opposition Violates International Law
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov affirmed the European Union's reducing of the embargo on supplying weapons to Syria in order to arm the "Syrian opposition" violates international law.

In a press conference on Monday, Lavrov said that the public lifting of this embargo wouldn't cancel out the international obligations that the EU must adhere to in terms of not providing weapons and munitions to non-governmental sides, noting that a significant number of western countries voiced concerns over such a step.

He pointed out that he is due to meet US counterpart John Kerry in Brussels on Tuesday where they will discuss the situation in Syria, adding that Kerry has an inclination towards finding a political solution for the crisis in Syria and that he hopes that this inclination will grow stronger.

Lavrov added that unfortunately, there are considerable number of sides who wish to waken this inclination, but in a recent phone call with Kerry, he noticed signs of earlier determination to find a political solution as soon as possible and seek means to move the situation towards talks between the government and the opposition.

On a relevant note, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced in a statement that Lavrov will attend the Russia-NATO council due to be held in Brussels on Tuesday, in which the attending Foreign Ministers will exchange viewpoints on current issues, including the situation in Syria
