Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr acknowledged that Australians are fighting alongside the armed terrorist groups in Syria, saying that this issue poses a serious threat to Australia's security.
In an interview with Sky News, Carr refused to comment on media reports stating that around 200 Australians, most of them of Middle Eastern descent, are fighting alongside armed groups in Syria, saying that such information is classified and that Australian intelligence agencies are taking this issue very seriously.
Media reports say that over 100 Australians are fighting alongside Jabhet al-Nusra, the terrorist organization affiliated with Al Qaeda. Jabhet al-Nusra was listed by Australia among terrorist groups last month.
Other reports indicate that hundreds of extremists affiliated with Al Qaeda from 14 European countries including Germany, Britain, France and Netherlands have traveled to Syria to fight alongside terrorist groups
