Damascus – The High Institute of Music in Damascus aims at enhancing the reality of music in Syria through building a specialized generation and qualifying musicians and maestros.

Music critic, Samim al-Sharif, said music is a key factor in building human imagination and artistic taste, stressing the importance of reforming and upgrading society in terms of music.

Chairman of the Institute, Athil Hamdan, called for dedicating more theatres and galleries for holding concerts, highlighting the importance of improving the living standards of the Institute's teachers, in addition to paying more attention to music curricula at schools.

Piano teacher at the Institute, Fadi al-Jubeili, pointed out to the importance of developing some parts of the Institute's curriculum, talking about the possibility of replacing foreign teachers with Syrians gradually in a way that could save a big amount of money which is allocated to the foreign teachers.

He clarified that a foreign teacher is being paid ten times more than a Syrian one.

The number of the academic musicians in Syria is about 500, the most of whom have graduated from the High Institute of Music in Damascus.

Depending on their talents, the musicians could improve the public artistic taste and create a music-loving audience through holding sophisticated concerts at Opera House or the project of 'Music on Road' which presents lively music at parks throughout the country every Friday.
